Overview
Zopiclone is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It helps decrease sleep onset latency and increase sleep duration.

Mechanism of Action
It binds to the GABA-A receptor complex, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA, which leads to sedation and sleep induction.

Dosage and Administration
The usual recommended dose is 7.5 mg taken orally just before bedtime. Lower doses (3.75 mg) are recommended for elderly patients or those with hepatic impairment.

Side Effects
Common side effects include a bitter or metallic taste in the mouth, dry mouth, daytime drowsiness, and dizziness.

Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with myasthenia gravis, severe respiratory failure, severe sleep apnea syndrome, and severe hepatic impairment.
