Overview
Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative used for the short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel preparation before clinical procedures.

Mechanism of Action
It acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate peristalsis and promote fluid and electrolyte accumulation in the bowel lumen.

Dosage and Administration
The usual oral dose is 5-10 mg at bedtime, producing an effect in 6-12 hours. Suppositories (10 mg) act much faster, usually within 15-60 minutes.

Side Effects
Common side effects include abdominal cramps, nausea, diarrhea, and hypokalemia with prolonged use.

Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with ileus, intestinal obstruction, acute surgical abdominal conditions, or severe dehydration.
