Overview
Zolpidem is a sedative-hypnotic medication used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It helps patients fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep.

Mechanism of Action
It acts as an agonist at the GABA-A receptor, enhancing the inhibitory effects of GABA in the central nervous system, which produces a strong sedative effect.

Dosage and Administration
The recommended dose is 5 mg for women and 5 to 10 mg for men, taken immediately before bedtime with at least 7-8 hours remaining before the planned time of awakening.

Side Effects
Side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, and complex sleep behaviors (e.g., sleepwalking, sleep-driving).

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment, severe respiratory impairment, or a history of complex sleep behaviors after taking zolpidem.
