Overview
Macrogol, also known as polyethylene glycol (PEG), is an osmotic laxative used for the treatment of constipation and fecal impaction.

Mechanism of Action
It is an inert polymer that binds water and retains it in the colon. This increases stool volume and softens it, which naturally stimulates colonic motility.

Dosage and Administration
The powder is dissolved in water before consumption. For constipation, the usual dose is 1-3 sachets daily. For fecal impaction, higher doses are used over a short period.

Side Effects
Common side effects include bloating, flatulence, nausea, and mild abdominal cramps.

Contraindications
It is contraindicated in patients with intestinal obstruction, perforated bowel, severe inflammatory bowel disease, or toxic megacolon.
