Overview
Gabapentin is a medication primarily used to treat partial seizures and neuropathic pain, such as postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain following shingles).

Mechanism of Action
Similar to pregabalin, it binds to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels, modulating the release of excitatory neurotransmitters.

Dosage and Administration
Dosing typically starts low (e.g., 300 mg once on day 1) and is gradually increased. Effective doses for neuropathic pain often range from 1800 mg to 3600 mg per day in divided doses.

Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, somnolence, and ataxia.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to gabapentin. Dosage adjustments are necessary for patients with renal impairment.
