Overview
Amlodipine is a long-acting calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chest pain (angina). It relaxes blood vessels, improving blood flow.

Mechanism of Action
It inhibits the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. This causes vasodilation, reducing peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure.

Dosage and Administration
The usual initial dose is 5 mg once daily, with a maximum dose of 10 mg once daily. It can be taken without regard to meals.

Side Effects
Peripheral edema (swelling of the ankles or feet) is a very common side effect. Other potential effects include dizziness, flushing, palpitations, and fatigue.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to amlodipine. Caution is advised in patients with severe hepatic impairment or severe aortic stenosis.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the risk. It is excreted in human milk, so caution is advised when administered to a nursing woman.
