Overview
Simvastatin is a well-established statin used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Mechanism of Action
It acts as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, decreasing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and upregulating LDL receptors to clear LDL cholesterol from the circulation.

Dosage and Administration
Typically administered as 10 mg to 40 mg once daily in the evening. The 80 mg dose is generally restricted due to an increased risk of muscle toxicity.

Side Effects
Potential side effects include gastrointestinal upset, muscle aches, and mild transient elevations in liver enzymes. The risk of myopathy increases with higher doses.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in active liver disease, pregnancy, and lactation. It should not be used with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., itraconazole, clarithromycin).

Pregnancy and Lactation
Contraindicated in pregnant and nursing women due to potential teratogenicity and interference with lipid metabolism in the infant.
