Overview
Ezetimibe is a lipid-lowering compound that inhibits the intestinal absorption of cholesterol. It is often used in combination with a statin for enhanced cholesterol reduction.

Mechanism of Action
It localizes at the brush border of the small intestine and inhibits the absorption of cholesterol, leading to a decrease in the delivery of intestinal cholesterol to the liver.

Dosage and Administration
The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily, taken with or without food. It can be administered alone or concurrently with a statin.

Side Effects
Generally very well tolerated. When used alone, side effects may include upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, and joint pain.

Contraindications
When used in combination with a statin, the contraindications for the statin apply (e.g., active liver disease, pregnancy). Hypersensitivity to ezetimibe is a direct contraindication.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether ezetimibe is excreted in human milk; caution is advised during breastfeeding.
