Overview
Atorvastatin is a widely prescribed statin medication used to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.

Mechanism of Action
It competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis in the liver. This leads to an increase in LDL receptors, enhancing the removal of LDL cholesterol from the blood.

Dosage and Administration
The usual starting dose is 10 to 20 mg once daily, which can be increased up to 80 mg depending on the target lipid levels. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

Side Effects
Generally well-tolerated, but may cause muscle pain (myalgia), joint pain, and mild gastrointestinal issues. Rarely, it can cause severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis) or liver enzyme elevation.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of hepatic transaminases.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Strictly contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation due to the potential for fetal harm and adverse effects on the nursing infant.
