Overview
Ticagrelor is a potent antiplatelet medication used to prevent blood clots in patients with acute coronary syndrome or a history of myocardial infarction. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and stroke.

Mechanism of Action
It is a reversible antagonist of the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets, preventing platelet activation and aggregation, which are key steps in blood clot formation.

Dosage and Administration
Typically initiated with a 180 mg loading dose, followed by 90 mg twice daily for a year. It should be taken with low-dose aspirin (75-100 mg daily).

Side Effects
Bleeding is the most significant risk. Other common side effects include dyspnea (shortness of breath) and increased uric acid levels.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with active pathological bleeding, a history of intracranial hemorrhage, or severe hepatic impairment.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy unless the potential benefit outweighs the risk. Discontinue nursing or the drug, considering the importance to the mother.
