Overview
Ethinylestradiol + Drospirenone is a combined oral contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy. It is also used to treat moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Mechanism of Action
It prevents pregnancy primarily by suppressing ovulation. Drospirenone also has anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid properties, which help reduce acne and water retention.

Dosage and Administration
One tablet is taken daily at the same time for 21 or 24 days, followed by a 7- or 4-day hormone-free interval (placebo pills or pill-free days), during which withdrawal bleeding occurs.

Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, breast tenderness, headache, mood changes, and irregular bleeding. It carries a small but significant risk of venous thromboembolism (blood clots).

Contraindications
Contraindicated in women with a history of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, stroke, severe hypertension, liver disease, or estrogen-dependent tumors.
