Overview
Mebeverine is an antispasmodic medication used primarily to relieve stomach cramps and spasms associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal disorders.

Mechanism of Action
It is a musculotropic antispasmodic with a direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, relieving spasm without affecting normal gut motility. It lacks significant anticholinergic side effects.

Dosage and Administration
The usual adult dose is 135 mg taken three times a day, approximately 20 minutes before meals. Extended-release capsules of 200 mg are taken twice daily.

Side Effects
Mebeverine is generally very well-tolerated. Rare side effects may include skin rashes, urticaria, and allergic reactions.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its excipients. It is generally not recommended for children under 10 years of age.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy due to limited safety data. It is not known if mebeverine is excreted in human milk, so it should be avoided during breastfeeding.
