Overview
Dimethindene is a first-generation antihistamine commonly used to relieve allergic symptoms, such as itching, hives, and allergic rhinitis. It is frequently available as topical gels or oral drops for paediatric use.

Mechanism of Action
It acts as a competitive antagonist at the H1 histamine receptor. By blocking histamine from binding to these receptors, it effectively reduces the physiological effects of histamine release, thereby alleviating itching, swelling, and allergic responses.

Dosage and Administration
For oral drops, the dosage is usually age and weight-dependent, often given three times a day. Topical gels can be applied to the affected skin area 2 to 4 times daily.

Side Effects
As a first-generation antihistamine, it can cause central nervous system depression, leading to drowsiness, fatigue, and reduced alertness. Other side effects may include dry mouth and mild gastrointestinal disturbances.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in neonates and premature infants. It should be used with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or asthma.
