Overview
Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) is a specific mixture of essential electrolytes and carbohydrates designed to treat and prevent dehydration, particularly resulting from acute diarrhea or gastroenteritis.

Mechanism of Action
It leverages the sodium-glucose co-transport mechanism in the small intestine. By providing a precise ratio of sodium and glucose, it significantly enhances the absorption of water and electrolytes back into the bloodstream, effectively restoring hydration.

Dosage and Administration
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in the specified amount of clean drinking water (usually 200 ml or 1 liter, depending on the brand). Sip slowly and continuously, especially after each loose stool.

Side Effects
ORS is generally extremely safe. Mild vomiting may occur if consumed too quickly. In rare cases of severe overconsumption or incorrect mixing, hypernatremia (high blood sodium) could develop.

Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluids, intractable vomiting, intestinal obstruction, or severe renal impairment.
