Overview
Dutasteride is a dual 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used for the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It reduces the size of the enlarged prostate and improves urinary symptoms.

Mechanism of Action
It inhibits both type 1 and type 2 5-alpha reductase isoenzymes, leading to a near-complete suppression of serum DHT levels.

Dosage and Administration
The recommended dose is 0.5 mg once daily, taken with or without food.

Side Effects
Common side effects include impotence, decreased libido, ejaculation disorders, and breast disorders (such as enlargement and tenderness).

Contraindications
Contraindicated in women, children, and patients with known hypersensitivity to dutasteride or other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
