Overview
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor used to treat enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and male pattern hair loss. It works by decreasing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body.

Mechanism of Action
It inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone to the more active DHT, thereby reducing prostate size and slowing hair loss.

Dosage and Administration
For BPH, the typical dose is 5 mg once daily. For hair loss, the dose is 1 mg once daily.

Side Effects
Side effects may include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and reduced ejaculate volume.

Contraindications
Strictly contraindicated in women, especially those who are or may potentially be pregnant, and in children.
