Overview
Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent used to relieve discomfort caused by excessive gas in the stomach and intestines. It is commonly used for bloating, belching, and flatulence.

Mechanism of Action
It acts by decreasing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce into larger bubbles that can be more easily passed through belching or flatus. It is not absorbed into the bloodstream.

Dosage and Administration
For adults, the typical dose is 40 to 125 mg taken orally after meals and at bedtime, up to a maximum of 500 mg per day. It is available in chewable tablets, capsules, and liquid drops.

Side Effects
Simethicone is physiologically inert and generally devoid of systemic side effects. Mild diarrhea or nausea may occasionally occur.

Contraindications
There are no absolute contraindications other than known hypersensitivity to simethicone or any component of the formulation.

Pregnancy and Lactation
Considered safe during pregnancy and lactation because it is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
